TREE PLANTING GUIDELINES

Healthy Trees Tomorrow

Strong Roots Start with Proper Care

Planting a new tree is an investment in the future of your property. With proper care during the establishment period, your tree can provide beauty, shade, and environmental benefits for decades to come.

The most important factor in the success of a newly planted tree is consistent watering. Newly planted trees have limited root systems and rely on supplemental watering to survive periods of heat, drought, and environmental stress. Proper watering encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil, helping the tree become more resilient and self-sufficient over time.

Watering Recommendations

Deep watering is far more effective than frequent shallow watering. Apply water slowly and thoroughly to saturate the root zone, allowing moisture to penetrate deep into the soil where roots can access it. Depending on weather conditions, soil type, and tree species, newly planted trees may require supplemental watering throughout the growing season.

A simple way to monitor soil moisture is to pull back the mulch and feel the soil beneath it with your hand.

  • Dry & Crumbly Soil βž” Needs Water πŸ’¦

Regularly checking soil moisture can help prevent both under-watering and over-watering while encouraging healthy root development.

Watch for Signs of Drought Stress

If your tree is not receiving enough water, you may notice:

  • Wilting or drooping leaves

  • Yellowing or browning foliage

  • Premature leaf drop

  • Branch dieback

  • Sparse or stunted new growth

If these symptoms occur, increase watering as appropriate and monitor the tree closely.

Mulching Matters

Adding a 2–4 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce competition from weeds and turf grass. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture buildup and potential decay.

When you choose Hillcrest Tree Care for your tree planting project, we mulch newly planted trees with our own natural wood chips. Unlike many commercially available mulches, our wood chips are free from artificial dyes and unnecessary chemicals, providing a natural and environmentally friendly option for your landscape. As the mulch breaks down, it also helps improve soil health by adding organic matter and supporting beneficial soil organisms.
