Norway Spruce
Expected Height/Spread: 40’-60’ tall, 25’-30’ wide
Another fast-growing evergreen that is planted for the purpose of privacy and wind protection, the Norway spruce is known for its beauty. The needles on these trees tend to be shorter (1/2”-1”) compared to other evergreens and their cones hang to be about 4-6”. Because of their quick growth, these trees make popular Christmas trees. Though they make great Christmas decoration, fully mature Norway spruce trees need to be planted a distance from structures to account for their broad crown.
How It Grows
The Norway Spruce is a fast-growing evergreen prized for its dense branching, graceful appearance, and excellent screening ability. It develops a broad pyramidal shape with slightly drooping branch tips as it matures. Its short dark green needles and long hanging cones create classic evergreen character year-round. Because of its rapid growth and full canopy, it is commonly used for privacy rows, windbreaks, and large landscape plantings. While preferring moist, well-drained soil, a Norway Spruce is adaptable once established after planting.
Where to Plant It
Norway spruce performs best in an open area with plenty of room to reach its’ full potential. If you are looking for year-round wind protection, this would be a great option for your property. Ideal planting locations include:
Property borders for privacy
Windbreak rows on rural or open properties
Large backyards and open landscapes
Naturalized evergreen groupings
Noise or visual screening areas
Avoid planting too close to homes, garages, driveways, or overhead utilities due to its large mature spread.
Pros & Considerations for Property Owners
Reasons to love it
Beauty. Year-round beautiful color and texture
Fast growth. Fast-growing for timely privacy screening
Shelter. Dense branches provide wildlife shelter
Adaptability. Adaptable to a variety of landscape settings
Things to consider
Before planting, plan for the tree’s mature height/width to avoid overcrowding or conflicts with any structures on your property. While Norway spruce trees are relatively low maintenance once planted, periodic watering during a drought and occasional spacing maintenance (pruning, voluntary tree & shrub removal, etc.) will keep trees healthy for years to come.
